In 1999, Dr. Sabharwal founded Home of Hope, to provide funding to one struggling orphanage in Chennal, India. By 2002, Home of Hope was supporting five orphanages, and today, it is helping more than 2,000 abandoned, destitute, or otherwise disadvantaged children at 14 orphanages and schools throughout India, plus the Center for Early Intervention on Deafness in Berkeley.
HOH volunteers raise funds, identify needy programs, and monitor progress. Addressing the most critical needs first, HOH may start by funding bathroom construction, or ensuring adequate nutrition. Once these challenges are met, HOH members can focus on empowering the children. Projects include setting up computer labs in Southern India and starting a sewing program for girls in a remote village in Northern India.
