Maya Leggett, MD

Assistant Physician-in-Chief, Hospital Operations and Inpatient Quality, KP South Sacramento

“Dr. Leggett is the glue that keeps our very busy hospital together. She comes up with creative solutions and works through details every minute of the day. Seemingly everywhere at once, she is always available. Nobody knows how she does it!”
Peter Miles, MD, FACC, Physician-in-Chief, KP South Sacramento

The super-human ability of Maya Leggett, MD, to bring together diverse groups of clinical professionals in an environment of open communication and problem-solving — all in service of improving hospital quality and patient safety — is a testament to her outstanding leadership.

A trauma/critical care surgeon physician at KP South Sacramento since 2009, Dr. Leggett helped develop and open the first KP Level II Trauma Center and served as its Assistant Chief of Trauma. This leadership role fed her interest in performance improvement, and she was appointed Chief of Resource Management and then Assistant Physician-in-Chief (APIC) of Hospital Operations and Inpatient Quality at KP South Sacramento. In 2023, she became TPMG’s Regional Assistant Chair of APICs of Hospital Operations.

Dr. Leggett has been the driving force to improve patient safety at the consistently busy KP South Sacramento hospital, where she brings a genuine passion for implementing evidence-based practices, addressing gaps, and reducing harm. Under her leadership, the hospital’s quality scores saw significant improvements including decreases in hospital-acquired pneumonia, pressure injuries, and catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

“To get the best quality of care for patients,” Dr. Leggett says, “we work at identifying opportunities for improvement before issues ever happen, and make sure that when they do we learn and ensure that they don’t happen again.”
