Margaret Mentakis, MD, became the first physician in her family in the early 1980s, before it was common for women to enter the field of medicine. In the early 2000s, she blazed another trail by becoming one of the few female physician leaders in technology.
An innovative, strategic thinker, Dr. Mentakis’ application of technology has transformed patient care, not only within Kaiser Permanente, but beyond. For more than a decade, she has led or singlehandedly developed the tools and workflows used by TPMG surgeons to deliver care to patients in KP Northern California.
She also developed all the clinical content initially implemented in our electronic health record system, KP HealthConnect. This work has set the bar for Epic, the technology company that designed the framework for KP HealthConnect. Its developers have incorporated her innovations into their standard product, now used worldwide.
