Steven Zurnacian, MD
“Dr. Zurnacian has taken on many leadership roles with great enthusiasm and success. His work ethic and attention to detail are truly amazing.”
— Kenneth Grullon, MD, Physician-in-Chief
Steven Zurnacian, MD, currently helms two of the Diablo Service Area’s largest departments — a task he’d undoubtedly describe as “a good start.”
As Assistant Physician-in-Chief of Women’s Health, he oversees eight Site Chiefs, two hospital labor and deliveries, and five subspecialty teams (Urogynecology, Perinatology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Gyn Oncology, and Hospitalists).
A hallmark of his leadership is a continual drive to promote a culture of patient safety. He led the team that developed the Cesarean Section Time-Out Poster for labor and delivery units. Now standard throughout the DSA, the workflow ensures that all OR team members provide safe, consistent care for every patient.
He has dedicated himself to building a strong leadership team at the local and subspecialty levels and then encouraging them to bring new ideas to the table and challenge the status quo. As he says: “This has led to our profound success in hiring, a deep bench in future leadership potential, and a unified department goal around service to our patients.”
Dr. Zurnacian has also undertaken a lead role in developing the DSA’s ninth medical office, in Dublin, which will include services not currently available in the immediate area: a comprehensive cancer center, an outpatient surgery center, specialty medical offices and a first-of-its-kind 24-hour urgent care center.
And if all that is not enough, he agreed to serve as interim Chief of Surgery while a new leader is being developed.
