“Dr. Heinlein has an unrelenting focus on providing the best care to our members.” — Gary Mizono, MD, Physician-in-Chief
“I have a special interest in minimally invasive surgery and treatments that replace surgery,” says Peter Heinlein, MD. His passion for promoting effective alternatives to traditional hospital based procedures has hastened the adoption of minimally invasive treatment options for Ob/Gyn patients throughout KP Northern California — and beyond.
Dr. Heinlein has researched and championed hysterectomy alternatives such as endometrial ablation, a treatment now performed in the office procedure room. As Chief of Ob/Gyn at San Rafael since 2007 and Assistant Chief of the regional Ob/Gyn Chief’s group since 2009, Dr. Heinlein’s leadership has helped the regional rate for minimally invasive hysterectomies soar to over 90%. An early adopter of the Essure non-surgical permanent birth control procedure, he is recognized as an international expert and consults with other regions on its use. He is currently advancing a minimally invasive hysteroscopic tubal occlusion procedure for patients who want sterilization.
Dr. Heinlein’s expertise has been recognized by organizations that represent the Ob/Gyn specialty nationally. He was selected by the American College of Ob/Gyn as the lead author for their opinion on salpingectomy for ovarian cancer prevention, a recognition that led to his appointment to the editorial board of the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.
Dr. Heinlein has also served on the KP National Surgical Core Group and has held leadership positions on several committees dedicated to furthering the advancement of technology across Kaiser Permanente.
