David Levy, MD, hospital medicine physician at KP Walnut Creek for 32 years, has been a leader in technology innovations that have transformed the practice of medicine, including the transition from paper charting to KP HealthConnect, deployment of KP iPhones for physicians, and adoption of telemedicine and video visits.

“I’ve always been a passionate about technology and medicine,” says Dr. Levy, Associate Physician-in-Chief of Technology for the KP Diablo Service Area. “One of the main reasons why I came to TPMG was that I wanted to be a part of implementing electronic medical records.”

In the late 1990s, Dr. Levy used transparencies on an overhead projector to show colleagues how computers were going to change medicine, and his KP Walnut Creek medical center was the first in KP Northern California to have Wi-Fi.

Dr. Levy played a pivotal role in TPMG’s Technology Leadership Group; helped lead the development of the Department Technology Lead role; and facilitated the implementation of computers in physician offices (and later laptops), as well as secure remote access to KP HealthConnect.

“And we are just getting started with artificial intelligence (AI), including predictive analytics, generative AI tools, and computer vision,” Dr. Levy says. “It’s all very exciting and dynamic. Things are moving very rapidly and we must stay on our toes to keep up.”
